Recently I (Randy) had the opportunity to fly out to our nations capital for an interview at George Washington University. It was a good and fun experience and the interview went pretty well. It had been a while since I had used a subway system and it took me a good while (ten minutes or so) just to figure out how to pay for the dumb ticket I needed to get from the airport to my hotel haha.
The city it self was pretty clean, but I was surprised how crapy the metro cars were...It was funny to be in a big city again vs Salt Lake. When I got off of the metro at my stop--at around 11pm on a Thursday night--I was pleasantly surprised to see the streets full of college kids out partying and having fun. If you were to stop off in downtown Salt Lake anytime after 8pm it is probably deserted.
My hotel turned out to be pretty sweet, it had these funky "screen" doors covering up the main door to the room.
The interview itself went really well and I think I did good. So we will see what happens with that. I will find out about their decision 8-10 weeks after the interview. So some time late Nov, or early Dec. Man that is a long time! I knew that DC was super expensive but I was shocked when a medical student told me he was paying 2200 a month for rent for a one bedroom apartment in the city!!! ... That is crazy! I don't know how they afford that, sheesh.
I didn't have much time to explore the city after my interview (only an hour) so I just walked over to the Kennedy center and went on the roof to get a quick overview of the city.
Honestly it was the most shortest, very expensive, un-relaxing vacation I have ever taken haha. Now I have the opportunity of doing it again on the 26-28th at Rochester, NY! Woo... not really. I'm already sick of this whole process, I really just want to start medical school! But I am excited that I got an interview in Phoenix sometime in December and Jaeme is going to come along with me! We are going to road trip it and drive there and then spend a few days there. So that will actually be a fun vacation.
Awesome Randy, it's so exciting to see how far you have come...it's a long road! At least you are seeing some cool areas in the process. You know my vote remains close to home. I know you will do well no matter where it is. We love you :)
ReplyDeleteThat's so exciting that you are getting these interviews in lots of different places...but sucks! I don't want you guys to move out of state :( That's me being selfish, but really, best of luck! I hope you are able to get into a great school and enjoy where you end up. Let's get together soon!! (with our spouses, of course *wink*)
